New 2025 COVID Boosters Prove Effective Against Latest Variants, Distribution Kicks Off Next Week

Covid 19

WASHINGTON — The latest COVID-19 boosters for the 2025-2026 season target the newest variants and show strong results in early tests, according to federal health officials. The vaccines focus on the JN.1 lineage, which drives most current cases, and will start shipping to clinics and pharmacies across the US next week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its guidance on September 19 after reviewing data from Pfizer, BioNTech, and Moderna. Tests show the shots trigger a robust immune response against variants like LP.8.1 and its offshoots, cutting severe illness risk by up to 80% in adults over 65. “These updates match the viruses circulating now, so they should give better protection than last year’s formulas,” said CDC Director Mandy Cohen in a briefing.

Pfizer and BioNTech reported topline data last month on their updated COMIRNATY vaccine, approved by the FDA in August. It uses mRNA tech to target JN.1, with trials showing higher antibody levels than the 2024-2025 version. Moderna and Novavax also got nods for their monovalent shots, with Novavax’s protein-based option hitting shelves in early fall.

Who should get one? The CDC recommends boosters for everyone 6 months and older, especially high-risk groups like seniors and those with chronic conditions. Timing matters: Get it now alongside your flu shot for fall protection. Distribution ramps up October 14, with free shots at most sites through insurance or programs like Vaccines for Children.

Side effects match past vaccines: sore arms, fatigue, or mild fever, usually gone in a day or two. No major safety issues turned up in the latest reviews.

With COVID cases ticking up in 20 states, experts urge quick action. “Don’t wait for symptoms—vaccination is our best tool against hospitalization,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccine researcher at Baylor College of Medicine.

This round builds on lessons from prior years, aiming to curb the 1.2 million US deaths since 2020.
